<div align="justify"> Eventually either the oil and gas supply will be exhausted or society will develop methods to rely completely on eco-friendly energy sources. What will then happen to the oil industry and their factories and structures? In this hypothetical situation, offshore drilling rigs, structures made of billions of euros worth of steel and concrete, will need to be repurposed. These highly sophisticated platforms and jackets resist storms, frequent waves (resonance), and salt water. These abandoned rigs provide society with the opportunity to repurpose and even extend the site over and under water. This is the focus of my thesis.

<div align="justify"> The idea is to maintain as much of the existing structure as possible to take advantage of the existing construction, which immediately drives down the costs. The rig also serves as fertile soil for a parasitic architecture. As an ever-growing structure, the first step requires addressing the base of the drilling rig, and then expanding. Due to the distance and the associated rough conditions, a new technique of building on the rig must be developed. A robotic manufacturing and production on site is worthy of further consideration. In that idea, materials can be delivered pre-fabricated to the rig’s offshore location, where the final assembly can be completed. Furthermore, research into certain (perhaps smart) materials, which can resist sea forces and are able to fit the desired architectural intentions, is required. As described earlier, the new parasite would grow incrementally on the platform. It is possible that the incremental process of growing and changing on the rig would never end: an ever growing, ever changing architecture (over decades), up to the scale of a small city. If that idea is found fruitful, an expansion system for structures must be developed. Relatedly, the immense structures underwater provide the opportunity for additional uses, while also creating the necessary soil to support structures.

In the future, it is possible to imagine a scenario of a network of small offshore cities, which have been developed out of useless drilling rigs. These different functions include housing, leisure (hotel), research/labs, education, renewable energy center (wind, water), revitalizing the sea, and connections/network of offshore rig islands.

A plan for continued maintenance and upkeep must be developed and followed. Cultural aspects, such as the distance and associated isolation compared to onshore cities will play a major role and also requires consideration. Solutions for these concerns must be developed as soon as possible.

There has always been a division between the city and the university’s campus, and within the policy of the University a strategy has been developed to contribute more to the city. Delft University of Technology has been part of Delft since 1842, but has since than grown into an institute that holds around 24.500 people, which is a massive rate compared to the population of Delft (96.168 people). Because of it’s size, new buildings had to be built to handle the capacity and substitute the old university buildings within the city centre and a campus was created. The problem with the campus in regards to the city is that it’s completely cut off from the city and its inhabitants.  And creates a beacon for the city of Delft of which inhabitants don’t feel included and therefore they don’t feel unity between them and the university and its students.

A few changes have been made within the campus to handle this capacity problem, the Aula has been opened as a studying place during the weekends, but these are temporarily solutions.

Omnivarious Architecture

The notion of architecture being able to adapt to it’s surroundings and responding to a demand generates a lot of opportunities for future architecture. Buildings could be able to expand, rearrange or morph into something new. Which results in public spaces that are constantly changing and highly adaptable. But how can we create a building that embodies this? Within my graduation project I would like to give shape to this idea.

Context

Located at the Campus of Delft University of Technology, the library will create the missing link between the city of Delft and it’s inhabitants and the campus within Delft. There has always been a division between the city and the university’s campus, and within the policy of the University a strategy has been developed to contribute more to the city. This library could generate that and bring academics and inhabitants together.

Because of it’s size, new buildings had to be built to handle the capacity and substitute the old university buildings within the city centre and a campus was created. Positive aspects for society/inhabitants

Facilitating “Flex working”

Het Nieuwe Werken is in upgrowth, people don’t need to work within their offices, but are able to choose their own working environments as a result of being able to work anywhere at any time because of our high level of connectivity within today’s society. The library could generate these working environments.


Creating a learning environment for children

More and more use is being made from library’s by mothers and fathers with their children. It creates an environment where children can play and learn at the same time and is an outcome for families who don’t have the (financial) possibilities to work on children’s curiosity and education from home. The library could generate playful but peaceful environments for children to learn, engage and arousing curiosity.
