Design Studio*

In connection to the Game Set Match (GSM) 3 symposium, there will be three themes investigated this semester: Next Generation Building, Robotic Building, and SMARTEnvironments. Descriptions of the themes are available on the GSM 3 website (http://gsm3.hyperbody.nl/).

The MSc 1&3 Design Studios are organized in groups. MSc 1 develops designs for 2500-3000 sq m building units and MSc 3 develops proposals for 6500-7000 sq m buildings. It is recommended that the students operate in groups of 3-4 and select their design agendas in dialog with the tutors. It is vital to understand the site and its socio-cultural context, the need/desire to cultivate a chosen theme or design agenda.

Besides being true to chosen concept, material usage and vision, students should address the notion of embedded interactive systems employed for spatial reconfiguration and climate control, CO2 reduction, and distributed and renewable energy production. The distributed, dynamic climate control could be conceived as a swarm of networked climatic small-scale or micro components, locally driven by people’s preferences and environmental conditions. In such a scenario the embedded, actuated devices would range in size and function from micro and small size actuators for opening windows or controlling sunshades and light conditions, to larger sized building components operating as ventilation and energy generator devices. Besides this, creative form-finding strategies using multi-agent systems and swarm computing shall also be provided to the students.*

Societal Context

The Green Village project explores how buildings can become smarter and greener to facilitate a better living (https://www.thegreenvillage.org/innovation-programmes/buildings). The general understanding is that the way we construct and use our buildings needs to change. Climate adaptation, energy transition, circularity are the main future challenges. New technology will help to solve these challenges. Like using bio based plastics to 3D print a house, or using windows to generate electricity. And with a heat pump collecting heat and store it to cool or warm your house. With Intelligent systems you can interact with your house, personalizing the lighting and climate systems.

Urban Context

The site for the MSc 1&3 project is on the TUD campus located between Berlageweg and van den Broekweg. Students will analyse site and implement research on contemporary societal challenges in order to make proposals for student housing as test bed for material and energy efficient building, enhanced human-space interaction and climate-adaptive building, as well as circularity in the built environment.
